ProACTion
(ACT - don't just React!)
ProACTion is a word we coined to describe the practive action needed for training children in character, (eg – honesty, integrity, generosity, etc), relational skills, and the development of the child’s unique gifts and skills.
When effective ProACTion is in place, children grow up knowing they are gifted by God, and with a sense of purpose about using those gifts to benefit others. They are others-centered. They have a clear sense of right and wrong, and are internally motivated to do right.
Without thoughtful ProACTion, children are often aimless. Their achievements are primarily self-serving, and they have an unstable sense of right and wrong. They can be difficult to trust, and are easily discouraged when life gets difficult.
Effective ProACTion results when parents:
- Talk often about their life and values.
- Exemplify the behaviors and values they desire in their children.
- Affirm “whatever is praiseworthy”.
- Create opportunities for you children to use their skills in meaningful ways.
- Help your children by gracefully coming along side them when they are struggling. Notice and remember the acronym TEACH!
The new book, "How to Grow a Connected Family" expands these principles and gives numerous concrete examples of these principles in action.
